If you’ve been snoozing during February, you’ve been missing out on some killer residencies at Lower East Side rock dive Pianos. Tuesday through Friday, they’ve got a different act running the show each night every week. I haven’t been able to make it out because of my pesky grad school obligations, but Friday night I’m cutting loose and making it out for a great night presented by Death + Taxes Magazine.
It’s the 3rd weekly installment of Headless Horseman‘s residency. This band is far and away the most mellow of the night. You can listen to their atmospheric, folky, and kinda creepy sounding 5 song EP at their Bandcamp.
They are joined by Blood Orange, aka Dev Hynes (who also records as Lightspeed Champion). I saw Blood Orange play recently at Union Pool and it blew me away. If someone‘s gonna do soft rock, then it might as well be Dev Hynes, because this new project is fantastic. He’s got a big year planned, with a single for Terrible Records and a full-length for Domino coming at some point. Word is he’s recruiting a band, too. I have no idea if that will be ready for this show.
Also performing are Rewards, the new band from former Chairlift member Aaron Pfenning. Rewards also played the above mentioned show (with Acrylics) and they are BIG. They’re channeling 80s artists like Echo & the Bunnymen and the Cure. Really great songs.
DADS are a new band featuring Quinn Walker of Suckers and Himanshu Suri of Das Racist. I have no idea what this will sound like, but they have an awesome band name and an awesome pedigree. So there’s that.
Das Racist will be DJing all night. Who knows what that means?
Special guests are promised. Who knows what that means?
(seriously, if you know holler in the comments or on Twitter. I’m curious!)
Headless Horseman play Pianos Friday, February 18 w/ Blood Orange, Rewards, and DADS. Showtime is 8pm and it’s $10 at the doors.
