Main Attrakionz Play the New Museum

Coming to New York for their debut performance: Main Attrakionz. The Oakland hip-hop duo recently released their new album/mixtape/whatever 808s and Dark Grapes II for free via their Bandcamp.

The duo comes to the New Museum as part of the Get Weird series, which according to the New Museum “will present a monthly series of performances featuring experimental and freaky jams.” I’m not sure if Main Attrakionz are necessarily weird or freaky, but they’re definitely part of a developing underground rap avant garde that’s fearless and uninterested in hip-hop cliches. I think 808s is uneven, but could be a grower. For a highlight, check out the much blogged about “Take 1,” produced by indie hip-hop producer of the moment Clams Casino.

I also recommend the video for the disorienting track “Perfect Skies” below.

This show begins at 7pm and will last approximately 90 minutes. I know hip-hop shows run notoriously behind schedule, but since this is at the New Museum I’m guessing it’s going to be punctual. Tickets are $12, or $10 for New Museum members.
